Work Experience
1975-1977
Librarian. VSO Volunteer at Mombasa Polytechnic and Shanzu Teachers College
(Kenya). The two jobs involved supervising and training local counterparts and
undertaking professional tasks at the former, and setting up a new library and
administering a British Council book grant at Shanzu Teachers College.
1978-1979
Cataloguer. Sir William Halcrow and Partners Consulting Engineers, London. Undertaking preparatory work in preparation for the automation of various departmental libraries, including unifying the classification and cataloguing systems of the different libraries.
1979-1981
Librarian. Ministry of Education and Culture, Maputo, Mozambique. Established a new library in a new building, including setting up the library systems and supervising and training staff.
1982-1983
Film Archivist. National Film Institute, Maputo, Mozambique. Organization of the film archive, including different types of prints and formats. Set up classification and indexing systems. The work included some technical duties such as editing, splicing, and also dealing with nitrate film stock.
1984-1985
Indexer. British Film Institute, London. Indexing and abstracting of foreign language film periodicals, English language television broadcasts, and maintenance of newspaper cuttings collection at the Institute’s Library.
1985-1991
Archivist. National Archives of Zimbabwe.Responsible for administration of the audiovisual collections at the archives. This included computerizing the cataloguing, indexing and retrieval of materials in the collections, acquisition of equipment from donor funding, and setting up systems for copying and repairing damaged and nitrate film. Established the audiovisual archive in a new purpose-built area, with refrigerated cold rooms for the storage of film. Also acted as Librarian of the National Archives when the incumbent was away. In 1986/7 worked on the translation to English of Documents of the Portuguese in East and Central Africa.Travelled extensively while at the Archives. Was a member of the International Council on Archives Audiovisual Committee, and attended several meetings. Also attended FIAF Congress in Havana. Attended a two-week course on the Micro CDS-ISIS library software package, of which the Archives was a pilot project. Studied the Ventura and Pagemaker software programs, and produced the first Zimbabwe National Bibliography to be typeset using DTP software. Was responsible for selection and purchasing of computer equipment for the Archives.
1992-1995
Senior Documentalist. SAPES Trust, Harare. Established a library in a new building at the Trust, and set up an automated catalogue. Produced an index to SAPEM magazine. Duties included writing proposals and drawing up budgets, and supervising and training staff. Organised regular seminars held at the Trust. Was responsible for running the circulation and distribution system for SAPEM magazine, including establishing, updating and maintaining the mailing list and advertising for new subscribers. Contributed a chapter in the book “Information for Economic, Social and Cultural Equity.” Produced translations from French and Portuguese where required.
995-1997
Librarian. School of Social Work, Harare. Automated the catalogue of the Library collection, and introduced a new classification scheme in line with the University of Zimbabwe Libraries. Was responsible for the acquisition from donor funding of new computer equipment for the library. Was in charge of receiving and distributing all email correspondence for staff at the college. Wrote regular book reviews for the Journal of Social Development in Africa.
1997
Consultant. Participated in a SADC regional project for the establishment of an agricultural information system for the SADC countries.
1997-2003
Senior Documentalist. SAPES Trust, Harare. Set up an automated system for newspaper cuttings and identified new library automation system. Wrote book reviews and articles for SAPEM magazine and the Mirror Newspaper. In 2003 was responsible also for the publications programme of the Trust, and the book review section of the Sunday Mirror newspaper. Produced articles for SAPEM and was also copy editor and proof reader for SAPES publications, as well as producing book indexes. Established linkages with other libraries and documentation centers in the region.

Programme Officer Documentation at the Zimbabwe Women’s Resource Centre and Network, Harare. Produced a detailed proposal for the upgrading of the Documentation Centre.

Editorial Work
Extensive experience in editing, writing and copy-editing, as well as some typesetting. Writing skills include report and proposal writing besides original articles.Was a member of the editorial board for “WomanPlus,” a magazine
produced by the Zimbabwe Women’s Resource Centre and Network.Editor, Oral Traditions Association of Zimbabwe. Produced the OTASA 1991 Conference Papers, the Records and Archives Management Association Newsletter, the OTAZI newsletter and two books (unpublished) for OTAZI (Chimurenga Chedu, children’s interviews with participants in the Zimbabwe Liberation Struggle, and a collection of OTAZI Forum presentations).
